Springer Nature, a leading global research, educational, and professional publisher, has announced its partnership with the UN Women Media Compact, a global initiative aimed at enhancing the empowerment of women. This move underscores Springer Nature's commitment to advancing gender equity within the scientific community and beyond.
Women now constitute 44% of Springer Nature’s global leadership, with the company's management board achieving a notable 50/50 gender split. This balanced representation reflects the company's ongoing efforts to promote gender equality at all levels of its organization. The partnership with UN Women formalizes a year-long engagement focused on gender equity, aligning with Springer Nature's goals to advance women's rights and eliminate biases and stereotypes.
The Media Compact is guided by two core principles:
• Forward Progress of Women’s Rights: Working towards eliminating biases and stereotypes that hinder women's progress.
• Increasing Women’s Representation: Committing to elevating the number of women in media, leadership, and decision-making roles.
Springer Nature's alignment with these principles is evident in its initiatives to support and celebrate women researchers and scientists. In September, the company will host a free virtual conference titled "Breaking Barriers for Gender and Health Equity Through Research," focusing on health and gender equity. In October, the annual Inspiring Women in Science Awards will take place, further highlighting the achievements of women in the field.
Moreover, Springer Nature has pledged to double its efforts to publish more papers authored by women researchers, emphasizing the importance of gender diversity in scientific literature.
Springer Nature's involvement in the UN Women Media Compact complements its broader commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Approximately one in four employees participate in supporting the SDGs through various networks and working groups. This media partnership will bolster the company's ongoing efforts to address gender issues and empower women in science, amplifying the impact of their work across the globe.
By joining the UN Women Media Compact, Springer Nature aligns itself with 94 other influential members, including the Thomson Reuters Foundation, The Huffington Post, and the BBC's 50:50 The Equality Project. This collaboration signifies a unified effort to drive gender equality in media and leadership worldwide.
