Springer Nature has announced plans to divest its consumer media businesses, including Scientific American in the United States and Spektrum der Wissenschaft in Germany. The move is part of a strategic decision to focus on the company’s core publishing activities in research, health, and education, while ensuring the long‑term development of the two science magazines.
Both Scientific American and Spektrum der Wissenschaft have longstanding roles in communicating science to broad audiences and hold established positions in their respective markets. The publications will be transferred to new owners with expertise in consumer media, which Springer Nature indicated would better support their future growth.
Frank Vrancken Peeters, Chief Executive Officer of Springer Nature, stated that the company had taken time to ensure the two brands were placed with organizations capable of investing in their future. He noted that the publications are respected science media outlets with valued histories and expressed gratitude to the teams that have sustained them.
Springer Nature confirmed it is working with both buyers to ensure continuity of publication.
• Scientific American will be acquired by LabX Media Group, a global science‑focused media company. The transaction is scheduled to close on June 24, 2026.
• Spektrum der Wissenschaft will be acquired by GeraNova Bruckmann, a Germany‑based publishing group. This transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to complete later in the year.
Financial terms of the deals have not been disclosed. Together, the two publications contributed approximately €25 million to Springer Nature’s group revenues in 2025. The company stated that the transactions will not affect its 2026 financial guidance and are expected to be slightly accretive to adjusted operating profit in 2027.
