STM launches the AI Portal to support responsible use of artificial intelligence in research publishing -

The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) has launched the AI Portal as a new online hub to help its members and the wider research community navigate the intersection of artificial intelligence and academic publishing.

AI is transforming research — from accelerating drug development to enabling green technologies — while also introducing risks such as AI-generated misinformation and manipulation of the academic record. As developments progress rapidly, publishers and research partners have already begun implementing safeguards, frameworks, and shared best practices. STM has developed the AI Portal to bring these collective efforts together in one accessible space.

The organization indicated that the AI Portal serves as a central hub curating resources, commentary, and guidance that reflect STM’s ongoing work to shape positions, contribute to global dialogue, and develop resources on AI. The initiative builds on extensive collaboration with STM’s member community.

The portal provides up-to-date information through several dedicated sections:

  • Resources and statements: A continuously updated library offering global guidance, analysis, and tools to promote ethical, human-centric AI in research publishing.

  • Rights reservation: Practical recommendations on mechanisms for reserving rights for text and data mining (TDM) use, including Robots.txt, TDMRep, and ISCC.

  • Copyright and licensing: STM’s position on copyright and licensing practices in the AI era.

  • Researcher perspectives: Curated articles reflecting how researchers view AI in their work.

  • AI in science: Insights on how AI supports discovery, research, and the academic record.

  • Where are we headed?: The STM Trends annual futurecast, which maps emerging opportunities, risks, and major questions.

STM emphasized that the AI Portal is a living site that will be updated regularly as developments in this field continue.
