Transparency regarding the role of artificial intelligence in research outputs is increasingly recognized as a key element of research integrity. Current practices for disclosing AI use differ across disciplines, regions, and publishing cultures. In September 2025, STM released Recommendations for a Classification of AI Use in Academic Manuscript Preparation as part of its ongoing engagement with this issue.
STM is collaborating with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Science Council (ISC), and the Global Young Academy (GYA) in a community‑driven initiative to establish a Global Reporting Standard for AI Disclosure in Research. Members contributed to the first consultation round held in early 2026 and to a dedicated focus track at the World Conference on Research Integrity in Vancouver in May 2026.
On July 9, the second consultation round was launched. STM stated that the consultation seeks input on five key questions:
1. Which AI use should be disclosed (thresholds)?
2. Where in the article disclosure should appear (placement)?
3. How disclosure should be structured (taxonomy)?
4. Whether non‑empty disclosure should be mandatory.
5. How responsibility and accountability should be signaled.
STM indicated that a third and final consultation will take place later in 2026, inviting feedback on a draft reporting standard for the scientific publishing community.
Organizations are encouraged to discuss the preparatory materials internally and submit reflections via the consultation webform. The deadline for contributions is October 16. According to STM and its partners, input from diverse perspectives will help shape a practical standard that supports transparency, trust, and consistency in scholarly communication.
