STM has issued a discussion document titled Toward Responsible Use of Research Content in Generative AI, which presents considerations for the responsible use of research content in generative AI tools and invites participation from the research and generative AI development communities.
The document outlines characteristics that distinguish research content and scholarly communication from other types of content, noting that such material is subject to peer review and linked to a Version of Record, with scholarly publishers maintaining responsibility for upholding integrity standards.
When generative AI tools process research content, these characteristics become relevant, including corrections and retractions, requirements for accurate attribution, proper citation, and clear indicators of verifiability. STM is seeking contributions and feedback from generative AI developers, researchers, institutions, funding bodies, and publishers.
