Thieme integrates Certara’s Chemaxon Marvin into chemical databases -

Thieme and Certara, Inc. have announced the integration of Marvin, Chemaxon’s chemical sketcher, into Thieme’s databases Science of Synthesis and Pharmaceutical Substances. The integration is intended to make drawing chemical structures and reactions faster, more accurate, and more user‑friendly.

Chemaxon, now part of Certara’s discovery software and services portfolio, develops informatics tools widely used in life sciences research and development. Marvin, its web‑based chemical drawing software, can be integrated into chemical databases and other chemistry applications.

Luca Szabó, Product Manager for Marvin at Chemaxon, explained that using multiple applications to draw compounds and calculate chemical properties can slow down scientific work. Marvin was designed as an all‑in‑one sketcher to streamline these tasks, enabling chemists to spend less time on drawing and more time on research.

Thieme, a provider of scientific information and services, emphasized its commitment to delivering timely resources to life sciences professionals. The company noted that effective experimental procedures and immediate access to up‑to‑date information are central to chemists’ daily work.

A flexible drawing tool with the name‑to‑structure conversion is considered essential for chemical‑reaction databases such as Science of Synthesis and Pharmaceutical Substances. Science of Synthesis offers full‑text descriptions of organic transformations, synthetic methods, and experimental procedures, supported by expert reviews. Pharmaceutical Substances provides chemical structures and detailed synthetic routes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), with information extracted from patent literature by specialists in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Dr. Alex Russell, Product Manager for Chemistry Databases at Thieme Group, reported that the migration to the new Marvin was smooth, requiring no backend development and minimal frontend adjustments. He added that Chemaxon continues to simplify integration processes, allowing Thieme to provide improved tools with minimal disruption to users.
