STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced a partnership with the University of Miami, under which the institution will use the former’s Scopus custom data (SCD) to track and measure faculty research and scholarly activity. Scopus, an abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, was reportedly chosen because the breadth of the content was expected to allow the university to accurately capture faculty research activity from a single data source.
The deal makes Miami the first academic institution in the US to use SCD for this type of measurement and tracking. The institution expects to link its unique faculty identifier with the Scopus author ID to better track faculty scholarly activity regardless of the institutional affiliation at the time of publication. Insight into the expertise of each of its faculty members is projected to allow the university to promote collaboration, and to build interdisciplinary teams for institutional research projects.
The use of SCD for this type of measurement is seen to be increasingly becoming the standard among different institutions. As research continues to become more interdisciplinary and cross-functional, the need for a singular, accurate and comprehensive research tool becomes a necessity for academic institutions to remain competitive, it has been observed.
