University of North Carolina at Greensboro shows support for open access -

Open access publisher BioMed Central, UK, has announced that the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) has become its latest institutional member.

UNCG serves nearly 20,000 students on campus and through a variety of distance learning programmes, with an emphasis on both teaching and research. The university hosts a number of research centers including the Center for Biotechnology, Genomics and Health Research, the Center for Health of Vulnerable Populations, and the Center for Research Excellence in the Nanobiosciences.

In 2007, the Faculty Senate formed the Committee for Scholarly Communications to support the development of new initiatives, including the development of more open access publishing by university authors. Under the auspices of the University Libraries, the university has established a supporter membership for an initial period of three years.
