Wolters Kluwer and ABMS partner to advance healthcare quality and safety with Ovid Synthesis -

Wolters Kluwer Health and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Portfolio Program have established a collaboration that has enabled Ovid Synthesis to serve as an official quality improvement workflow platform for physicians and medical specialists.

Through this agreement, quality improvement work completed within Ovid Synthesis at institutions participating in the ABMS Portfolio Program can be recognized as contributing to professional development for physicians and physician assistants. This recognition is intended to support the awarding of continuing certification credit for participation in improvement activities.

The collaboration is described as aligning with national efforts to address fragmented quality improvement workflows that hinder progress within health systems. Integrating Ovid Synthesis into the ABMS Portfolio Program is anticipated to provide career-related benefits by recognizing clinicians’ quality improvement contributions and reinforcing their role in advancing adoption of key care initiatives.

With access to Ovid Synthesis, organizations can use a centralized, evidence-based platform designed to streamline quality initiatives, accelerate measurable outcomes, and provide operational and financial efficiencies. This approach is expected to reduce the administrative burden traditionally associated with compiling and submitting documentation for quality improvement certification, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care while still receiving formal credit. The work performed will support the ABMS priority of ensuring continued learning as part of certification requirements.

The ABMS Portfolio Program collaborates with hospitals, academic medical centers, medical associations, specialty societies, and government agencies throughout the United States to acknowledge the improvement work already being performed by physicians and physician assistants. More than 30,000 ABMS diplomates have received credit for work in areas such as preventive care, patient safety, disease-specific protocols, resource management, and systems-related challenges. Program sponsors have reported cost savings, including an example of a hospital system that estimated $900,000 in annual savings through reduced administrative and clinician work hours.

The ABMS has indicated that incorporating Ovid Synthesis into the program will help streamline the process of preparing and submitting documentation for quality improvement continuing certification credit, allowing clinicians to focus additional time on activities that directly support patient care and safety.
