Wolters Kluwer Medi‑Span implemented at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust -

Wolters Kluwer Health has implemented its Medi‑Span® medication decision support solution at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, marking the first deployment within the NHS and extending into one of Europe’s largest cancer centers. The solution integrates personalized prescribing insights into the electronic patient record, using alerts and clinical data to support safer, more informed medication decisions at the point of care. The Christie treats more than 60,000 patients annually, serving both regional and national populations, underscoring the scale and impact of this implementation for healthcare delivery and patient safety.

The Christie, based in Manchester, is recognized as Europe’s largest single‑site cancer center and the first facility in the UK accredited as a comprehensive cancer center. It serves a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, with more than a quarter of patients referred nationally.

Medi‑Span, developed by the makers of UpToDate®, provides clinicians with screening and personalized alerts tailored to each patient’s clinical context. By comparing patient profiles against current medical and pharmaceutical literature, the system helps flag potential adverse drug effects and contraindications, offering meaningful alerts to healthcare professionals.

The solution can be embedded into electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA) systems via clinical APIs. At The Christie, it has been integrated into the Better Meds ePMA system, which is linked to the Trust’s electronic patient record.
