Americans embrace GenAI in healthcare but hold concerns over transparency, reveals Wolters Kluwer survey -

In a recent survey conducted by Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information and point-of-care solutions for the healthcare industry, it was found that a significant majority of Americans believe Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is poised to make an impact in healthcare. However, the study also highlights prevalent concerns surrounding transparency and the origin of medical information utilized by GenAI.

With GenAI gaining widespread attention throughout 2023, the survey, titled "Generative AI in Healthcare: Gaining Consumer Trust," sheds light on the perceptions and apprehensions of Americans regarding the integration of AI in healthcare settings.

Key Findings: Transparency Issues: An overwhelming 86% of surveyed Americans express their primary concern about GenAI in healthcare, citing a lack of transparency regarding the origin and vetting of the information used; Internet Searches and False Information: A notable 82% of respondents worry that information used by GenAI may be sourced from unfiltered internet searches, and 49% express concerns about the potential production of false information; Provider Source and Criteria: Concerns about GenAI use diminish when specific criteria are met. For instance, 80% of respondents express concern if their healthcare provider uses GenAI, but this drops to 63% if they are assured that the technology comes from an established healthcare source, created by medical professionals and continuously updated; Building Trust: To gain consumer trust, the survey emphasizes the importance of transparency in the development and training of GenAI. A significant 86% of respondents would need assurance that medical professionals were involved in creating the source content, and 81% would require knowledge of the company's long track record in the healthcare industry; Perceptions on Future Adoption: While 34% believe GenAI will become widely used in healthcare within the next five years, 19% anticipate a faster integration, happening within the next one to two years; and Feelings about GenAI: A substantial 44% of Americans express concern about GenAI in healthcare, while 36% are curious about its potential applications.

Additionally, nearly half (45%) believe GenAI can enhance healthcare by providing more thorough and accurate readings of medical tests, X-rays, or images. Additionally, 42% would use GenAI as a resource for follow-up questions after appointments or to inquire about medications when a pharmacist is unavailable.

Wolters Kluwer Health recently launched AI Labs, a collaborative resource enabling healthcare providers to explore GenAI within UpToDate, a leading clinical decision support solution used by over two million users globally.

The survey was conducted online between October 27 and November 2, 2023, with 1,000 U.S. adults aged 18 and older, designed to be representative of the total U.S. population according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
