Princeton University Press partners with Cashmere to license academic content for AI platforms -

Princeton University Press (PUP) has entered into a partnership with Cashmere, an independent AI content management platform, to license academic material for use in copyright‑compliant AI systems. The agreement enables PUP to use Cashmere’s infrastructure as a gateway to AI platforms, ensuring that copyright, citation, and author compensation are respected.

The partnership is based on principles of trust, collaboration, and transparency. Both organizations emphasized their commitment to developing a model that balances the interests of copyright holders with the needs of AI innovators. The licensing arrangement is expected to increase the discoverability of PUP’s catalog while contributing to a framework for responsible integration of scholarly content into AI‑powered products, particularly Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) licensing.

Under the agreement, PUP will determine which content is licensed and under what terms, ensuring that book contracts and underlying copyrights are fully upheld. Cashmere’s approach excludes large language model training, focusing instead on visibility within emerging platforms while replicating established industry norms for content licensing.

Jonathan Munk, CEO of Cashmere, stated that the partnership reflects a commitment to building infrastructure for ethical, licensed AI content access. He noted that the collaboration demonstrates how publishers can participate in the AI economy on their own terms.

Christie Henry, Director of Princeton University Press, explained that the Press has long been committed to making significant scholarly ideas widely accessible. She said that engaging with AI in a way aligned with PUP’s mission ensures transparency, ethics, and accountability for authors and readers. Henry added that Cashmere provides the infrastructure for PUP to define the terms under which its content is made available to AI applications.
